A Welcome Message from Our President

Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Sligo. Please feel free to explore our site, which we hope will give you an insight into what we’re about. We’re a club of approximately 50 men and women, drawn from the professional, business and service community in Sligo. Membership of Rotary provides an opportunity for friendship and fun with like-minded people, within a club dedicated to the betterment of society through humanitarian, vocational and educational service both locally and internationally. The guiding principle of Rotary is “Service Above Self”. We organise various projects throughout the year in support of our goals; we meet weekly on Mondays for lunch at 12.45 at the Sligo Park Hotel. Our club is but a small cog in a much bigger machine, Rotary International, an international organisation of over 30,000 clubs, which provides a large international social network for Rotarians.

It is a great honour for me to serve as club President for the year 2010 / 2011, particularly when I look back over the names of those who have preceded me. I am proud to accept this role and ask for the support of all members during my period in office. We’ve a busy programme of events for the year ahead, which will require support not just from Rotarians but also from the people of Sligo who have been so supportive of our projects down through the years.

Projects for the year ahead include:

  • Pakistan Flooding Emergency Relief fund in conjunction with Sligo Credit Union.
  • Continued deliveries of Meals on Wheels for Sligo Social Services.
  • Hosting visiting Group Study Exchange team from British Columbia.
  • “Focus on the Crocus” – planting of 5,000 crocus bulbs locally planned to bloom in
  • February to mark Rotary Day.
  • Continued support for Rotary Foundation in the campaign to eradicate Polio worldwide.
  • Facilitating the local “Interact” youth club, which introduces and fosters in young people the ideals of a service organisation.
  • President’s Dinner, on Friday 19th November at the Sligo Park Hotel.
  • Christmas Remembrance Tree project.
  • Youth Leadership competition.
  • Gala charity theatre night, February 2011.
  • And probably a few more also!!

The club is always on the lookout for new members so if you are interested don’t hesitate to contact us. Likewise, if you have any general queries about the club please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours In Rotary,

Barry Cannon
